# How to schedule Instagram posts from a computer or the app

You can schedule Instagram posts three ways. In the Instagram app, turn on "Schedule this post" under More options. On a computer, use Meta Business Suite, which is free. A scheduler such as Weekbird adds a calendar across networks. Third-party tools need a professional account, and carousels hold up to 10 items.

**Key takeaways**

- The Instagram app schedules reels, photos and carousels up to 30 days ahead, with a cap of 25 scheduled posts a day.
- Meta Business Suite is free and schedules Instagram and Facebook posts from a computer.
- Third-party schedulers publish through Instagram's API, which needs a Business or Creator account.
- Through the API, captions hold 2,200 characters and feed images must be JPEG files of 8 MB or less.
- Most failed posts come from missing permissions, a personal account or media outside Instagram's limits.

You can schedule Instagram posts in three places. On your phone, the Instagram app has a "Schedule this post" switch under More options. On a computer, Meta Business Suite schedules Instagram and Facebook posts for free. If you post to several networks, a scheduler such as Weekbird puts everything on one calendar. Plans start at $24 a month with unlimited posts.

The steps below cover each route, the limits that cause failed posts and the fixes for the usual errors.

## How to schedule Instagram posts: three routes

- **Instagram app**: where: Phone; cost: Free; best for: One account, a few posts a week
- **Meta Business Suite**: where: Computer or phone; cost: Free; best for: Instagram and Facebook from a desktop
- **A scheduler**: where: Computer; cost: Paid; best for: Several networks, clients or teammates

Instagram's help centre says the app route needs a public account. Third-party schedulers publish through Instagram's API, and the API needs a Business or Creator account.

## Schedule a post in the Instagram app

Instagram lets you schedule reels, photos and carousel posts from the app. You can schedule up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days ahead.

1. Tap **Create**, then tap **Post** or **Reel**.
2. Pick a photo or video and tap **Next**.
3. Add your caption, effects or filters.
4. Tap **More options**.
5. Turn on **Schedule this post** (or **Schedule this reel**) and choose a date and time.
6. Tap **Done**, then **Back**, then **Schedule**.

To change a scheduled post later, open your profile, tap **Menu** and choose **Scheduled content**. From there you can edit, reschedule, delete or share it now.

Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers don't work with scheduled content, so publish those by hand.

## Schedule Instagram posts from a computer with Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite is Meta's free tool for Facebook and Instagram. It is the native way to schedule Instagram posts on desktop.

Before you start, you need full control of the Instagram account or **Content** permission for it.

1. Open Meta Business Suite and click **Create post**, on the home page or the **Content** tab.
2. Under **Post to**, choose your Instagram account. You can add your Facebook Page too.
3. Under **Media**, add your photos. Instagram takes up to 10.
4. Under **Post details**, write the caption. You can give Facebook and Instagram different text.
5. Turn on **Scheduling options** and pick a date and time. **Active times** suggests slots based on when your followers were active over the past 7 days.
6. Click **Schedule**.

Your scheduled posts appear in the **Planner** tab and under **Content \> Posts & reels \> Scheduled**. To move one, open it, click **Options**, then **Manage post \> Reschedule post**.

## Limits to know before you schedule

Schedulers send your post through Instagram's API, and the API rejects files outside these limits. The figures come from Meta's [Instagram media reference](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/instagram-graph-api/reference/ig-user/media), checked 2026-10-10.

- **Account type**: limit: Business or Creator (professional)
- **Caption**: limit: 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags, 20 @tags
- **Feed image**: limit: JPEG only, 8 MB, aspect ratio 4:5 to 1.91:1
- **Carousel**: limit: Up to 10 images or videos, cropped to the first item's ratio
- **Reel**: limit: 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 300 MB, MOV or MP4
- **Story video**: limit: 3 to 60 seconds, 100 MB
- **Story image**: limit: JPEG, 8 MB, 9:16 recommended

The Instagram post size guide has the full set of dimensions. If you write long captions, the Instagram character limit guide shows how the 2,200 characters get used up.

## Fix common scheduling problems

Meta lists four usual causes when a post won't schedule or publish: missing access, an unresolved problem with the Instagram account, a hacked account and a system error. In practice, check these first:

- **You can't pick the account.** Ask the owner for full control or Content permission on that Instagram account.
- **A scheduler can't connect.** Switch the account to Business or Creator in Instagram's settings, then reconnect.
- **The image upload fails.** Export it as a JPEG under 8 MB. A PNG or a very tall image will be refused.
- **The carousel looks cropped.** Instagram crops every item to the first one's shape, so put an image with the ratio you want first.
- **The post went to Facebook but not Instagram.** Meta notes that a post scheduled to both may not publish to both. Check **Content \> Scheduled** for an error message and post it again.
- **The post never went out.** Open the scheduled list, read the error and reschedule. Keep the original file so you can upload it again.

## Schedule with Weekbird

Weekbird is a social media planner I built for small teams, freelancers and agencies. If Instagram is one of several networks you post to, it keeps them on one week or month calendar.

1. Connect your Instagram professional account.
2. Write the post once. Adjust the Instagram version's caption and media if it needs to differ from the other networks.
3. Weekbird checks the caption against the 2,200-character limit and the 10-item media limit before you can schedule.
4. Pick a time on the calendar and confirm.

Stories work with Business accounts only. Every plan includes unlimited posts: Solo is $24, Team $49 and Agency $149 a month, or $19, $39 and $119 a month billed yearly. The Instagram network page lists what Weekbird supports on Instagram.
